ANALYZING AND EVALUATION
Analyzing Popular Manga Images


MANGA CRITIC

Subject: Asian Art - Manga
Grade Level: 6-8



Students will to review, analyze and evaluate their own ideas about popular manga art images in the United States. The students will record and document their ideas on voicethread to foster a greater understanding of the medium and why Manga is becoming popular in America.

D. Evaluate works in the arts and humanities using a complex vocabulary of critical response.

OBJECTIVE (S)
Students will evaluate a popular Manga icons and communicate their opinions to the group
Students will learn how to compare and contrast their ideas with their peers using Voicethread
Students support their ideas with facts

MATERIALS/RESOURCES
Computer with Internet access (computer lab or laptops)
Projector connected to a computer (SMARTboard if available)
Images of popular Manga images set up on Voicethread
Hardcopies of popular Manga images (Hello Kitty, Astro Boy and Pokemon)
Handouts: How To Set Up Voicethread, Analyze & Evaluate Worksheet and 3-2-1 Review Worksheet
Whiteboard or large chart paper
Pens or chalk

  • Check with IT staff make sure internal mics and headsets are working and are available
  • Set up passwords for students, if necessary
  • Check to Voicethread is working





PROCEDURES
1. MANGA CRITIC
  • Explain to the students they will be "Manga Critics" using popular icons in Manga
  • Using a computer and projector pull up Voicethread to introduce the Manga characters the students with critique
  • Explain to the students that their final “critics” will be recorded on Voicethread
  • Handout Analyze & Evaluate Worksheet. Review the worksheet and go over the material the students need to cover. Use the images on the whiteboard to discuss and share student ideas about the pieces of art.
  • Handout How To Set Up Voicethread – Together as a whole class, review the steps and assign passwords to each student. Make sure all students are set up and are able to go back to the website for future work.

2. ANALYZING AND EVALUATING
  • Students should work independently and begin evaluating the popular Manga images on Voicethread
  • Students should first fill out the Analyzing & Evaluation Worksheet to develop ideas
  • Teach should review the student’s information and make sure they are on task
  • Students should write out their “script” for Voicethread

3. APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE
  • When the student’s script is ready, they should record their response on Voicethread
  • Students need to respond to 2 other students’ observation. One that they agree with and One they disagree with
  • As a whole class, we will listen to the response and discuss what we observed and how it can help the Manga characters the students are creating on their own.
  • At the last 5 minutes of the class, have each student fill out a 3-2-1 Review Worksheet

EVALUATION
  • Each student will fill out a 3-2-1 Review Worksheet
    • Lists three things they learned about Voicethread and/or the popular Manga images
    • List two ways the student will use the information in the future
    • List one question they still have about the lesson.

DIFFERENTIATED ACTIVITIES
  • For large a group, this lesson can easily be done in small group (2-3 students), with a step-by-step lesson plan.
  • Teacher may need to work with student individually to help set up Voicethread accounts
  • Handouts and worksheets can be adapted for all learning abilities in the classroom
  • Visual images will be available to assist in learning
  • Students may choose to only type their responses on Voicethread

PLAN B
  • If the above Voicethread does not work, have the student create a poster on Glogster to support their evaluations of the popular Manga images
  • Use hard copies of the popular Manga Images and the Analyze & Evaluation Worksheet listed above.
  • Teacher will review and approve students ideas
  • Students should support their ideas using Glogster
  • Using the SMARTboard, demonstrate how Glogster works (http://www.glogster.com/)
  • Students may use other electronic versions of the popular Manga images (Hello Kitty, Astro Boy and Pokemon)
    • Youtube
    • Flickr
    • Google images
  • The Glogster will be presented to the whole class
  • Adapt the 3-2-1 Review Worksheet to reflect Glogster and have the students complete individually

PLAN C
  • If Voicethread is unavailable, use hard copies of the popular Manga images and the Analyze & Evaluation Worksheet listed above
  • Have the student form into pairs and fill out the Analyze & Evaluation Worksheet together.
  • Teacher will review and approve students ideas
  • Students should support their ideas using PowerPoint
  • Students may use other electronic versions of the popular Manga images (Hello Kitty, Astro Boy and Pokemon)
    • Youtube
    • Flickr
    • Google images
  • The PowerPoint will be presented to the whole class
  • Adapt the 3-2-1 Review Worksheet to reflect PowerPoint and have the students complete individually
