Manga with Japanese Students
Subject: Asian Art - Manga
Grade Level: 6-8


Global citizenship will be introduced and the students will use ePals.com to form a relationship with Japanese students as a way to form a collaborative learning experience about Manga.

OBJECTIVE(S)
Students will explore the fundaments of being a Global Citizen
Promote cross-cultural collaborations with fellow students from Japan
Students will share different ideas about Manga and how it is a part of the culture in the United States and Japan

MATERIALS/RESOURCES
Computer with Internet access (computer lab or laptops)

  • Check with IT department
  • Create Username and passwords for students
  • Set up student controls

PROCEDURES
1. INTRODUCE THE PROJECT
  • Introduce ePals and how it works to the students
  • Have students think about ways they could utilize the program and record the ideas
  • Have students format questions they would like to ask students about Manga from Japan
  • Explain to the students the class will be inviting another classroom in Japan to communicate with us about Manga.
  • As a whole class, create a general statement/question to post on ePals to invite a classroom to be “pen pals”

2. SET UP ePALS.COM ACCOUNTS
  • On the projector, hook to a laptop open up ePals.com
  • As a whole class, show the students the different features of the website
  • Each student should set up an account
  • Let the students explore the different features of ePals (SchoolMail, create a profile, map search, SchoolBlog, etc.)

3. CREATING A FRIENDSHIP
  • Once the students have a developed a relationship with students from Japan, begin discussing ePal projects the class could do together that explores the idea of the eastern and western influence on animation.
  • For example, the students could create a manga together and the student from Japan could translate the text into Japanese – the Japanese student could create a Grapic Novel and our students could translate the text to English
  • Students should fill out 3-2-1 Review Worksheet

EVALUATION
Each student will fill out a 3-2-1 Review Worksheet

  • 3 things they learned about manga from our ePALs partners
  • 2 ways you will use the information in the future
  • 1 question you still have about collaborating with students globally


DIFFERENTIATED ACTIVITIES
This lesson is heavily dependent on the internet be available to the students. If it is not available, the lesson may not be successful.

PLAN B
  • The lesson can easily be done individually, letting the students form one-on-one relationships.
  • Students should follow the sign up procedures listed above and post a inquiry on Classroom Match.
  • Student should have created a project to do with the other student from Japan. Teacher should approve each project
  • Use 3-2-1 Review Worksheet to allow the students to self-evaluate the manga

PLAN C
  • If the Internet is unavailable, the students could create a 3 – 4 frame manga and use a Japanese translator to translate their manga
  • Using the character the student develop for the manga unit, student should create a manga story
  • Once the story is created, the student should translate the text into Japanese
  • If the student would like, the could practice making the Japanese characters
  • Use 3-2-1 Review Worksheet to allow the students to self-evaluate the manga
