ONLINE TOUR AT ASIAN ART MUSEUM

Subject: Asian Art - Manga
Grade Level: 6-8


Students will interact with a variety of Japanese paintings and prints on the Asian Art Museum’s Online Tours. Students will compare and contrast the different Japanese paintings and prints to the Manga art that the class has reviewed throughout this unit.

MATERIALS/RESOURCES
Computer with Internet access (computer lab or laptops)
Projector connected to a computer (SMARTboard if available)
Handouts: 3-2-1 Review Worksheet
Whiteboard or large chart paper
Pens or chalk
Hardcopies of Manga Art images and Japanese Painting and Print

Dream Worlds: Modern Japanese Prints & Paintings from Robert O. Muller Collection

PROCEDURES
1. MANGA CRITIC
  • Using the hardcopies of the Manga Art Images, post them on the whiteboard and review the different characteristic of the art as a whole class. Explain they will act as “art critics” and will evaluate the Manga style art to Japanese paintings and prints on the Online Tour at Asian Art Museum website.
  • In the computer lab (or using the laptops), ask the students to go to the Asian Art Museum website noted on the whiteboard.
  • On a computer hooked up to the Smartboard and projector, go to the noted website and lead the whole class through the process. Making sure all students are able to connect to the site and found the “Dream Worlds: Modern Japanese Prints & Paintings” Online Tour.
  • Demonstrate how the Online Tour operates and let students interact with the different features

2. ANALYZING AND EVALUATING
  • Have the students work in a group of 2 or 3 students
  • As a group the students should choose a Japanese painting or print that they would like to compare to the Manga Art images (posted on the chalkboard)
  • Have students note, “What are the similarities? What are the differences?”
  • Students should write down their ideas. One student should record and the other student share the information with the rest of the class.

3. APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE
  • Bring the class back together to share their ideas.
  • Using the Smartboard, have a student from each group put up the Japanese painting or print the compared to the Manga Art Image.
  • On the side of the artwork, using the SMartboard markers, students should note the similarities on the left of the painting and differences on the right side.
  • As a whole class, lead a discussion about the discoveries each group made. Make sure each group had a turn to discuss their art images (should be 4-5 groups).
  • Towards the last 10 minutes of the class, have each student fill out a 3-2-1 Review Worksheet

EVALUATION
  • Each student will fill out a 3-2-1 Review Worksheet
    • 3 things you learned from this lesson (Online Tour and/or Japanese painting and prints)
    • 2 ways you think this information relates to Manga
    • 1 question you have about Japanese Art or Online Tours

DIFFERENTIATED ACTIVITIES
  • Depending on the needs of the students this lesson can easily be done individually, with a step-by-step lesson plan.
  • This lesson plan could be adapted as whole class participation. Giving each student a turn on the computer to interact with the Online Tour
  • Teacher may need to set up all the students Voicethread accounts prior to conducting the lesson
  • Handouts and worksheets can be adapted to fit the learning needs of all students in the classroom.
  • Teacher may select the small groups to fit the needs of the students

PLAN B
  • If the above Online Tour at the Asian Art Museum does not work, have the students do a internet search for the paintings and prints from Dream Worlds: Modern Japanese Prints & Paintings.
  • Students should break into small groups of 2-3
  • List the title of the Japanese art on the chalkboard or provide the students with a handout with the titles listed on it.
  • Have the students do the same with Manga Art Images listed on the chalkboard or provide of handout with Manga Art listed.
  • Have the students choose one Japanese print or painting and one Manga Art image to compare and contrast.
  • Once the students have determined the images they will compare, have the note, “What are the differences?” “What are the similarities?”
  • If the students are not fimiiar with Glogster, demonstrate how to use Glogster using the (http://www.glogster.com/)
  • The student should create a “poster” on Glogster the represent the information the observed.
  • The students should share the posters with the whole class.
  • Use 3-2-1 Review Worksheet can be used to evaluate

PLAN C
  • If the Internet is unavailable, use hard copies of the Manga Art Images and the Japanese paintings and prints from Asian Art Museum.
  • Have the student form into groups of 2-3 students.
  • As a group, student should select one Manga art image and one Japanese painting or print.
  • Once the students have determined the images they will compare, have the note, “What are the differences?” “What are the similarities?”
  • Once the students have assemble all the information, have the group create a PowerPoint presentation to support their evaluation of the art work.
  • Students will share their work with the whole class
  • 3-2-1 Review Worksheet can be used to evaluate
